Winter Wheat

Wheat is grown in all 77 counties in Oklahoma. Hard Red Winter Wheat, the primary class of wheat, was planted on more than five million acres across the state in 2011. Winter wheat also serves as pasture to produce many millions of pounds of beef during the winter months. For this reason, of the 5.1 million acres of wheat planted in 2011, 3.2 milion acres were harested, with the rest being completely grazed by cattle. It takes nine seconds for a combine to harvest enough Oklahoma wheat for 70 loaves of bread. One Oklahoma family can live 10 years off of bread produced by one acre of wheat.
